Hit and run driver jailed for eight years
A driver who hit and killed a pedestrian while fleeing police has been jailed for eight years.
Shaun Rimmer was speeding along Great Northern Road in Aberdeen on 16 August 2021 when he hit Simon Musabayana before driving off.
The 48-year-old pedestrian was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and underwent numerous surgeries before dying almost four weeks after the incident.
At Edinburgh High Court on Thursday, Rimmer, 28, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and was jailed for eight years and disqualified from driving for 14 years.
Police officers spotted Rimmer driving a stolen Seat on Byron Avenue, Aberdeen at 2pm on 16 August 2021.
They decided to try and stop the car after receiving information and followed him for a time before switching on their lights and trying to pull him over. Rimmer sped off and the officers radioed to other cars in the area.
Another police vehicle followed Rimmer with their lights on but again he did not stop, driving at speed through a red light and onto Great Northern Road.
Mr Musabayana, a mental health nurse, was crossing Great Northern Road when he was hit by Rimmer, who was driving at around 50mph in a 30mph zone. Collision investigators calculated that Rimmer would have been able to stop in time had he not been speeding,
Rimmer did not stop and was seen to be driving with his head out the window because damage to the windscreen meant he could not see. The car was later found abandoned on St Machar Place.
Over the next three weeks, Mr Musabayana underwent numerous surgeries but died on 11 September 2021.
David Green, procurator fiscal for homicide and major crime, said: “Shaun Rimmer’s dangerous driving and excessive speed as he tried to evade the police had a catastrophic effect; taking Simon Musabayana’s life and leaving his family and friends devastated.
“Simon Musabayana endured numerous operations to try and treat the appalling injuries inflicted by Rimmer’s actions and his family had to watch for weeks while his health deteriorated before he died.
“Our thoughts are with Mr Musabayana’s family during what must be a very difficult time for them.”
