Human Rights included in Holyrood’s Equalities Committee remit
This Scottish Parliament has agreed the Equal Opportunities Committee remit be expanded to include scrutiny of human rights.
The committee will now be known as the Equalities and Human Rights Committee, and its work programme, due to be published at the end of October, will reflect the expanded remit.
The committee’s membership will remain as at present.
The convener of the Equalities and Human Rights Committee, Christina McKelvie MSP, said: “We see human rights and equal opportunities as complimentary and interconnected. They should underpin everything we do as a parliament and as a country.
“We’re looking forward to making human rights real to the lives of people in Scotland. Each and every one of us has human rights, and keeping them in the mind of policy makers in Holyrood is essential to achieving outcomes that benefit everyone – in particular our equalities groups.”
