BTO has appointed Ian McCann as a partner in the firm’s construction and engineering team.

Mr McCann brings almost 30 years of experience in non-contentious construction and engineering law and considerable expertise in advising clients across the UK and Europe in both the public and private sectors.

Grant Hunter, BTO’s managing partner, said: “We are delighted to welcome Ian to the firm.

“His vast experience, from working in a number of UK wide legal firms, and his client-focused approach, make him a strong asset as we continue to grow and strengthen both our contentious and non-contentious construction and engineering services.”

Mr McCann has provided advice in connection with some of the highest profile construction and engineering projects in the UK, including Engineering Framework Agreements for major infrastructure works in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

His extensive background includes delivering strategic advice across the entire project lifecycle for a range of clients, including developers, investors, contractors and professional consultants.

Fraser Hopkins, head of BTO’s construction and engineering team, added: “Ian’s portfolio of prominent projects, including The Edinburgh Trams project and the redevelopment of the St James Quarter in Edinburgh, makes him a first-class addition to the team who will both support and help grow our client base.

“Likewise, being triple-qualified to practice law in Scotland, England and Wales, and Northern Ireland, positions Ian as a perfect adviser in our cross-border projects.”

Mr McCann also brings to the firm valuable leadership experience as an Ambassador for Causeway: Ireland Scotland Business Exchange, where he has served as company secretary and board member since its inception.

In this role, he supports business collaboration and networking across the Irish Sea, working closely with the governments of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Commenting on his appointment, Mr McCann said: “I am delighted to join what is now recognised as a ‘go to’ construction team in the Scottish legal market across a number of sectors.

“I look forward to working closely with Fraser and the team and leading on the development of BTO’s non-contentious construction practice, building on my experience and longstanding relationships with significant businesses in the construction industry.”
