International delegates gather in Edinburgh for conference on transport law and logistics

The event was distinctly international in character with 60 per cent of visitors arriving from outside the UK.

Edinburgh offered a warm welcome to delegates from throughout the world with speakers and attendees from New Zealand, USA, the United Arab Emirates, throughout continental Europe and the UK. Conference delegates were greeted by Lord Glennie, Principal Commercial Judge in the Court of Session.

The conference’s keynote speech was delivered by Professor Emeritus Jan Ramberg of Sweden. Professor Ramberg is an expert in the field of freight forwarding. His resume includes experience as president of the Swedish Maritime Law Association and the Scandinavian Maritime Law Institute, chairman/member of the CISG Advisory Council, and senator of the European Law Institute.

He is honorary vice president of Comité Maritime International (CMI) andhonorary member of FIATA.

He is also a prolific author in the field of contract law, maritime law and transport law. During his presentation: “Is the law of transport and freight forwarding lagging behind in the modern development of commercial law?” he shared his perspectives formed through a lifetime of experience in commercial law. The conference attracted a large number of renowned specialists in the field and the diversity of the delegates promoted insightful and stimulating contributions from academics and practitioners alike.

Professor Dr Nikoleta Radionov from the University of Zagreb praised the “relaxed although structured atmosphere” and the “very high level of presentations”.

Conference organisers Dr Lamont-Black and Dr Ruiz Abou-Nigm added: “We are very grateful to all speakers, chairs and conference delegates for their excellent contributions which made this event such a success.” Lawtext Publishing will be collating the conference proceedings for publication as a book.

In addition, some of the articles will also be included in a special edition of theJournal of International Maritime Law (JIML).
