James Wood Lecture 2021: Free speech and hate speech
The annual James Wood Lecture will be held on Thursday 28 October 2021 and will feature Professor Adam Tomkins, who will speak about free speech and hate speech.
Professor Tomkins has held the John Millar chair of law at the University of Glasgow since 2003. He was a member of the Scottish Parliament from 2016 until 2021 and returned full-time to the university after standing down at the 2021 election.
While an MSP, he was convenor of the Justice Committee, during the period when it considered the legislation which became the Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Act 2021.
The James Wood Lecture is the principal public lecture hosted annually by the University of Glasgow School of Law, having first been delivered by Lord Fraser of Tullybelton in 1987. Recent James Wood lecturers have included Eleanor Sharpston QC, Professor Dame Hazel Genn, Lord Sumption and Ian Forrester QC. It is generously supported by the James Wood Bequest Fund.
