Legal journalist John Forsyth learns about the realities of rehabilitating convicted knife criminals on a visit to the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit in the latest episode of BBC Radio 4’s From Our Home Correspondent.
Many experts regard the scheme in Glasgow as a model for other UK cities - notably London - to emulate in the fight against the explosion in incidents of violent street crime.
From the segment: “There’s no triumphalism or complacency in Glasgow despite the recent efforts to place it on a pedestal for its remarkable contribution to reducing homicide numbers and knife crime over the last decade and a half.
“The unit’s current director, Niven Rennie, acknowledges that per capita Glasgow is still more violent than London and there is much to do.
“The maps of violence tend to coincide with maps of poverty. And maps of drug deaths. And maps of young suicide.”
