One of Britain’s leading legal figures will discuss how political and social upheaval is influencing human rights law at an event hosted at the University of Dundee.

Judge Tim Eicke KC, the UK’s judge at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, will explain how the court is seeking to secure fundamental rights and freedoms at a time of military conflict and climate change, and in the aftermath of the pandemic.

An alumnus of the university, Judge Eicke will return to his alma mater to deliver Crises in Europe: A View from the Strasbourg Court this week.

Professor Peter McEleavy, from Dundee Law School, said: “We are delighted to welcome Tim back. It is inspirational for our students to hear from one of our leading alumni.

“Tim has enjoyed a stellar career since he graduated from Dundee. Before being elected to the European Court of Human Rights he was a leading public law and human rights law silk.

“His lecture comes at a key time because the European Court is once again high on the UK political agenda, with calls for the UK to withdraw from the European Convention of Human Rights.”

The lecture will take place in the Dalhousie Building, Old Hawkhill, on Thursday 16 February at 5.30pm. Tickets are free but registration in advance is required and can be completed online.
