Law Society of Scotland Council accepting nominations

Law Society of Scotland Council accepting nominations

The Law Society of Scotland is now accepting nominations for Council members to represent solicitors in the following areas:

  • Aberdeen, Banff, Peterhead & Stonehaven – two Council seats
  • Ayr, Dumfries, Kirkcudbright & Stranraer – two Council seats
  • Airdrie, Hamilton & Lanark – two Council seats
  • Edinburgh – five Council seats
  • The Council is the Law Society’s principal decision making body. It agrees the society’s strategy, annual operating plan and budget and takes key policy decisions on a broad range of subjects.

Most Council members are solicitors who are elected from geographical constituencies across Scotland. Around a third of these seats come up for election each year. There are also up to nine co-opted members representing other interest groups and nine non-solicitor members.

You should submit your completed nomination and candidate information forms to registrar David Cullen by 12 noon on Wednesday 26 April 2017.

The detail in your candidate information form will provide the basis of your election profile and will be shared on the Law Society’s website as part of the campaign.

If you would like to nominate yourself, you must be a member of the society working in the relevant constituency. Your nomination must be supported by two proposers, who must be either practising or non-practising members of the society and have business addresses in the constituency for which you are standing.

Council members will take up their new roles as of 27 May 2017.
