Lawyers aiming to raise £4,000 for Gaza medical aid

A group of Scottish Muslim women lawyers are aiming to raise £4,000 for the charity Medical Aid for Palestinians by collectively walking 365 kilometres – covering as much ground as the whole Gaza Strip.

The charity initiative comes against the backdrop of a devastating humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The local healthcare system has effectively collapsed and access to medical supplies is extremely limited.

The crisis is particularly acute in the southern city of Rafah, where around 1.5 million people are sheltering in what the office of the UN’s high commissioner for human rights has described as “deplorable sub-human conditions”.

Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) is a UK charity which offers medical services in the West Bank, Gaza and Lebanon, and advocates for Palestinians’ rights to health and dignity.

Zibya Bashir told SLN that Palestinians in Gaza “are currently experiencing the worst humanitarian crisis imaginable… homes and hospitals have been destroyed – not even their schools, colleges and universities have been spared”.

She added: “As women, mums and lawyers we are appalled by the brutality and war crimes the Palestinian people have been exposed to for decades and most recently since October 2023.

“We felt we had to do something to help the millions currently suffering from starvation and a lack of medical care. Any donation no matter how small is welcomed.”

The lawyers welcome donations via JustGiving, where they have already raised over £1,200.
