Lawyers to give evidence to MSPs on abolition of 'not proven' verdict

Senior lawyers will give evidence to Holyrood’s Criminal Justice Committee tomorrow as it considers proposals to abolish the not proven verdict amid other changes to jury trials.

Part 4 of the Victims, Witnesses, and Justice Reform (Scotland) Bill will abolish the not proven verdict, reduce the size of criminal juries from 15 to 12 jurors and increase the minimum number of jurors required for a guilty verdict.

The committee will tomorrow hear evidence from Ronnie Renucci KC, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Advocates; Stuart Munro for the Law Society of Scotland; Stuart Murray, president of the Scottish Solicitors Bar Association (SSBA); and Laura Buchan and Alisdair Macleod of the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS).

The proceedings, which will be streamed live from the Livingstone Room (CR6), will begin from 10am on Wednesday morning.
