Letter: Outdated terminology
Dear Editor,
You published an article on 21st March 2024 entitled “Outer House allows proof in civil damages claim raised by Emily Drouet’s siblings against abusive boyfriend”. I note that you describe Ms Drouet as having “committed suicide after being abused by her boyfriend”. It reminded me of the importance of language and nuances.
The phrase “committed suicide” is insensitive, outdated and suggests culpability on the part of the deceased. I don’t consider that taking issue with this verb or adjective [sic] is a triviality. The phrase carries negative connotations and an historical stigma that suggests a criminal act. This contributes to the perpetuation of negative attitudes towards mental health struggles.
More neutral, compassionate and appropriate language would be to say “died by suicide” or “ended her life by suicide”.
