Lucy Mackay

The STAR Awards are an annual celebration event held by the Students’ Association to recognise and celebrate the hard work of volunteers and student groups.

Lucy is the GCU Law Clinic student director. The clinic is a student-led initiative which provides free and confidential legal advice and assistance. In 2020/21 Lucy led the clinic during the pandemic.

Working with the clinic’s academic director, Claire McFadzean, Lucy ensured its services and projects were moved entirely online, while managing the clinic’s largest number of student volunteers to date.

In her previous role as projects manager for the clinic in 2019, Lucy developed the GCU Women in Law Project, profiling women lawyers in Scotland. This has now grown into the clinic’s Equality in Law Project, which focuses on groups who experience inequality and are often under-represented in the legal profession.

The aim of the project is to discuss the challenges faced by these groups and bring to light their successes, while also highlighting positive role models for our GCU Law students through blogs and podcasts.

Seonaid Stevenson-McCabe, lecturer in law at GCU, said: “GCU is the University for the Common Good. Lucy lives the Common Good principles in everything she does.

“With unwavering enthusiasm and a passion for access to justice and equality, she has worked to ensure the clinic can continue to deliver legal advice and run our projects online this year. Lucy is a brilliant young woman and this Award is very well-deserved – we’re sending congratulations from all of us at GCU Law.”
