Lockerbie: al-Megrahi family to appeal to UKSC directly over conviction
Judges have rejected a bid by the Lockerbie bomber’s family to appeal against his conviction to the Supreme Court.
On 31 January 2001, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was convicted by three judges of the 1988 bombing of Pan Am flight 103, which killed 270 people.
In January five judges rejected a third appeal against the late Mr Megrahi’s conviction.
Aamer Anwar, solicitor for the family, said they will seek leave to appeal directly to the Supreme Court.
In a written judgment, the Lord Justice General, Lord Carloway said the court “has had some difficulty in understanding the exact nature of the challenge”.
It said: “Although the case is clearly one of public importance, the proposed grounds of appeal do not raise points of law of general public importance.
“The principles of law which the court applied were all well known, settled and largely uncontroversial in the appeal.
“For these reasons, the court refuses permission to appeal to the UK Supreme Court.”
