Lord advocate signs statement opposing female genital mutilation
Today is the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation. This is a United Nations sponsored day of awareness and action against female genital mutilation (FGM)
To coincide with this event the Scottish Women’s Support Project and Scottish government have drawn up a statement opposing FGM.
This document, which sets out the scope of the legislation and where victims can obtain help and support, has been signed by the lord advocate Frank Mulholland QC (pictured) and others, including Alex Neil, Shona Robison, Fiona McLeod and the chief constable of Police Scotland, Sir Stephen House.
The Lord Advocate said: “I welcome the opportunity to offer my support to this campaign and add my signature to the Statement.
“Female genital mutilation is an appalling crime with potentially devastating health consequences.
“We would urge anyone who is threatened with or subject to female genital mutilation to contact the police where their complaint will be dealt with sensitively.
“Anyone involved in female genital mutilation will be prosecuted.”
