Lord Arthurson installed as a Senator of the College of Justice

Paul Arthurson QC has been installed as a Senator of the College of Justice at a ceremony in Parliament House, taking place on the bench with the title Lord Arthurson.

At the installation ceremony in the First Division courtroom, the Lord President, Lord Carloway said: “Lord Arthurson, on behalf of the Court of Session bench I welcome you to the office of Senator of the College of justice.

“You have a distinguished legal career commencing with degrees from Edinburgh and Oxford Universities. You were also a tutor of mercantile, commercial and tax at Edinburgh.

“You passed advocate in 1991 and had a successful civil practice especially in reparation, especially medical negligence, cases. You took silk in 2005, the same year that you had become a floating sheriff in Tayside, Central and Fife.

“In 2011 you became a resident sheriff in Edinburgh. Two years later you were appointed a Temporary Judge.

“You have already sat many times in both the Outer House and High Court of Justiciary and therefore know what to expect from the legal practitioners, who are represented here today, from your colleagues on the bench, notably the appellate divisions.

“Your career as a sheriff has also seen you appointed to the Sheriff Appeal Court and as a specialist Sheriff Personal Injury Court sheriff.

“This breadth of experience will undoubtedly stand you in good stead in the coming years. We all wish you and your family well to this new and exciting path in your legal career.”

Paul Arthurson is a graduate of the University of Edinburgh and became an advocate in 1991, specialising in civil practice, principally in the Court of Session, latterly in high value reparation and clinical negligence actions. He has served as a chair of tribunals for the Mental Health Tribunal for Scotland and on the Parole Board for Scotland. He was appointed as a sheriff in 2005. Sheriff Arthurson was also appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2005 and a Temporary Judge of the Court of Session in 2013. He has served as a member of the Sheriff Appeal Court since 2015.
