Lord Carloway wished well ahead of retirement
Following the announcement that the Lord President, Lord Carloway is to retire next year, senior lawyers have wished him well.
Dean of Faculty, Roddy Dunlop KC, said: “Ever since instructing the then Colin Sutherland QC as counsel when I was a trainee solicitor, through junioring to him in my early days as counsel, then appearing before him on many occasions and laterally working closely with him since my appointment as dean, he has been a true inspiration to me and a great friend to the Faculty of Advocates.
“He has presided over many hugely important cases that have shaped the development of Scots law and has presided over significant changes in the profession – most notably through the challenges of the pandemic. He will be sorely missed, and I wish him and Jane a long and happy retirement when it comes.”
President of the Law Society of Scotland Susan Murray said: “I would like to congratulate Lord Carloway on behalf of all Scottish solicitors for what has been an exemplary legal career. We wish him the very best for his retirement beginning next year.
“Lord Carloway has made an enormous contribution to Scots law and in particular in providing effective leadership as Scotland’s courts have undergone significant change over the past decade. He deserves praise especially for his leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic and for his willingness to embrace technology in the courtroom.
“The Law Society of Scotland has always found Lord Carloway to be approachable and receptive when we have sought to provide feedback or raise concerns on behalf of our court practitioner members.
“We look forward to welcoming Lord Carloway’s successor in due course, and in continuing to work constructively with all members of the Scottish judiciary.”
