Lord Neuberger commends Aberdeen Law Project at annual lecture
Former Supreme Court president, Lord Neuberger, delivered the Aberdeen Law Project’s annual lecture on 28 March.
His address on “Access to Justice and the Rule of Law” emphasised the need for the community to have access to legal guidance and the importance of ensuring that members of the public are educated and aware of the law.
Lord Neuberger highlighted the evolving nature of the UK’s legal system and acknowledged that it can sometimes be challenging for citizens to grasp the laws that are created and enforced. Lord Neuberger noted how the Aberdeen Law Project is driving change and improving access to the legal system.
Addressing ALP, Lord Neuberger commended its efforts, saying: “You’re doing a very good thing, for the public and for yourself.”
He praised student-led legal projects for making the law more accessible, not only for adults but also for increasing young people’s awareness of legal matters.
Lord Neuberger discussed the duality of the law. He said: “To get access to justice, justice has to be worth getting”, noting how the public and the government must work together to bridge the gap to justice. His address covered many topics, ranging from the role of AI in law to prevalent legal cases in today’s society. However, the overarching theme was the significance of understanding the law and the critical importance of ensuring access to justice for all individuals.
Emma Jamieson, student director, said: “This year’s annual lecture was a fantastic celebration of the Aberdeen Law Project and all of our member’s dedication and commitment. To hear Lord Neuberger’s thoughts on our work and its impact within a broader societal context, will have surely encouraged our members to continue to work hard to help reduce the access to justice gap in our local community. An issue that we can only combat if we all work together.”
