Man jailed for 10 years after breaking into 61-year-old woman’s home and raping her

A man who forced his way into the home of a woman before violently raping and sexually assaulting her has been jailed.
Bradley Shand was found guilty of attacking the 61-year-old following a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh. The court heard how the victim was home alone and watching television when she heard a banging sound on 9 January 2023.
She went to investigate and found Shand kicking and smashing a door at the Edinburgh property. After forcing his way inside, the attacker took her mobile phone to prevent her from calling the police.
The 23-year-old then subjected her to a serious sexual assault, which left her injured and extremely distressed. Shand fled but came to the attention of a police officer on a nearby road a short time later. He was seen waving frantically with blood on his hand and wrist.
Clothing and DNA belonging to the attacker were discovered at the scene of the rape, linking Shand to the crime. During the trial, which took place in February, Shand admitted also attempting to rob a couple of their car keys and motor vehicle shortly after the rape.
He also banged on their door and smashed a window by throwing an ornament through it, all while shouting and swearing. On 15 April 2025, at the High Court in Edinburgh, Shand was given an extended 12-year sentence with 10-years in custody.
His name has been added to the sex offenders register indefinitely.
A non-harassment order, banning him from contacting or attempting to contact the rape victim, was granted for a 15-year period.
Katrina Parkes, procurator fiscal for High Court sexual offences, said: “Bradley Shand is a sexual predator, who preyed on this victim in her own home. She should have been completely safe but was instead subjected to a horrific ordeal by a violent stranger.
“This is a truly horrendous case, and my thoughts remain with the victim and her loved ones. I give thanks to all those involved in securing this prosecution, which has held Shand accountable while also protecting others from harm.”
