Man sentenced to 30 years’ imprisonment for double murder
An 80-year-old man who murdered a woman and their young son more than 45 years ago has been sentenced to life imprisonment at the High Court in Inverness.
William MacDowell was given a minimum term of 30 years for the murder of Renee and Andrew MacRae in November 1976.
MacDowell was also found guilty of attempting to defeat the ends of justice by disposing of their bodies and personal effects.
Scotland’s procurator fiscal for High Court, Ruth McQuaid, said: “The disappearance of Renee and Andrew has cast a shadow over the community in Inverness for decades.
“Andrew should have been approaching his 49th birthday but instead was robbed of his life, and a young mother was taken from her other child in the cruellest way.
“We can but hope that MacDowell’s conviction for their murder provides some comfort and closure for a terrible event.
“This conviction shows that COPFS is dedicated to securing justice for victims and their families no matter how much time passes.”
