May pressed by MPs to guarantee post-Brexit employment rights
A cross-party group of MPs and activists who campaigned to keep the UK in the European Union has demanded reassurances over employment rights after Brexit, The Guardian reports.
The new group - called Vote Leave Watch - said it wanted Prime Minister Theresa May to make commitments that EU employment rights would be incorporated into domestic law.
Its patrons include Labour MP Emma Reynolds and Liberal Democrat MPs Norman Lamb and Tom Brake.
Labour MP Chuka Umunna, chair of the new group, has written to Ms May.
In his letter, he writes: “You owe it to the working people of Britain to make clear that the pledges made by your cabinet colleagues to retain EU legislation on workers’ rights will be delivered.”
Vote Leave Watch has called for UK legislation to replace EU regulations and laws like the Working Time Directive which it said would otherwise cease to apply to the UK after Brexit.
The group also called for an audit of European court judgments to identify areas where UK legislation should be strengthened to match the same standards as the EU.
