New chair for JUSTICE Scotland
The convener of the Faculty of Advocates’ Human Rights and Rule of Law Committee, Shelagh McCall QC, has been appointed chair of JUSTICE Scotland.
Ms McCall practised as a solicitor for several years before becoming a member of Faculty in 2000. She took silk in 2015. She was formerly appeals counsel in the Office of the Prosecutor at the UN International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia in the Netherlands.
She said: “It is a privilege to be appointed as the Chair of JUSTICE Scotland. JUSTICE is 60 years old this year and its work in rule of law and human rights is as vital as ever in these turbulent times.
“In the last year, with Derek Ogg QC, as chair, JUSTICE Scotland has published ‘Law for Scottish lawmakers’, convened a working group to research the waiver of right to legal assistance, and hosted a number of thought-provoking events. These are big shoes to fill but I am looking forward to the opportunity to build on that work and help take JUSTICE Scotland forward.”
