New policing sub-committee to scrutinise 2012 act
The Scottish Parliament has agreed to the creation of a Justice Committee Sub-Committee on Policing to consider and report on the operation of the Police and Fire Reform (Scotland) Act 2012, as it relates to policing.
The committee’s membership is drawn wholly from the current Justice Committee, and its work programme will be agreed in the coming weeks. However, it is anticipated that the new sub-committee will build on the work carried out by Session Four’s Justice Sub-Committee on Policing. The sub-committee will meet on Thursday lunchtimes.
Sub-committee membership is as follows: Margaret Mitchell MSP, Mary Fee MSP, John Finnie MSP, Rona Mackay MSP, Ben Macpherson MSP, Liam McArthur MSP and Stewart Stevenson MSP.
Convener of the Justice Committee, Margaret Mitchell MSP, said: “Effective policing is central to an effective justice system. Following the unparalleled reforms to policing in Scotland carried out in the last session, there is a clear need for the parliament to continue to scrutinise the new set-up. This sub-committee will provide just such a forum.”
