New Scottish Land Court deputy chair appointed

A panel was formed to provide advice to Scottish ministers on suitable candidates to fill the office of deputy chair.

Mr Maclean was also appointed as a member of the Scottish Land Court by Her Majesty the Queen, on the recommendation of Scottish ministers, a requirement to take on the post of deputy chair.

Mr Maclean is a former legal assistant to the Lord President of the Court of Session.

Originally from the Isle of Skye, he is a graduate of the universities of Aberdeen, Cambridge and Edinburgh.

He was admitted as a member of the Faculty of Advocates in 1994 and served on the Scottish government’s EU Agricultural Subsidies Appeals Procedure External Advisory Panel from 2005 to 2013.

Mr Maclean is in civil practice at the Scottish bar where he specialises in property litigation, the law of landlord and tenant, trusts and succession.

He will take up his appointment as deputy chair of the Scottish Land Court on 14 September.

This is a part-time appointment of 3 days per week.

Remuneration for the post is £132,184 per annum, equal on a pro rata basis to that of a sheriff.

The post became vacant when the former deputy, The Hon Lord Minginish, was elevated to the post of chair of the Scottish Land Court.

The Scottish Land Court has the authority to resolve a range of disputes including disputes between landlords and tenants, in agriculture and crofting.

The court is based in Edinburgh but holds hearings throughout Scotland.
