New Zealand privacy commissioner to become next UK information commissioner
New Zealand’s privacy commissioner John Edwards has been named as the UK government’s preferred candidate for information commissioner.
Mr Edwards, who has over 20 years’ experience practising law and specialising in information law, will appear before MPs next month for pre-appointment scrutiny.
Elizabeth Denham, who has served as the UK’s information commissioner since 2016, is set to stand down this October once her successor has been appointed.
Ms Denham had previously served as commissioner at the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia in Canada.
Mr Edwards is nearing the end of his second five-year term as New Zealand’s privacy commissioner, having been appointed in 2014.
