The International Bar Association (IBA) will be hosting two events with a focus on Scotland tonight.

From 6pm GMT, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, will be in conversation with Mark Ellis, IBA executive director. You can find out more and register here.

The centre is also presenting a session immediately before this (5pm GMT) entitled “Scotland as a Dispute Resolution Jurisdiction”.

With the next International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA) Congress destined for Edinburgh in 2021, Scotland has been in the spotlight for the international arbitration community over the last few years, but what are the advantages of arbitration in Scotland?

Despite being part of the United Kingdom, Scotland has a separate legal system from England and Wales (retained under the Act of Union 1707). However, many laws in the commercial sector apply across the UK.

What are the implications for dispute resolution in Scotland?

With arbitration and mediation on the increase in Scotland, what is the view of the court on these alternatives to litigation?

In this webinar, our speakers will discuss dispute resolution in Scotland, including the court’s approach to arbitration and mediation, and share expertise on operating in this and other jurisdictions.

Speakers:

  • Lord Carloway, Lord President of the Court of Session
  • Lucy Reed, president of the International Council for Commercial
    Arbitration
  • Brandon Malone, chairman of the board of the Scottish Arbitration Centre
  • Andrew Mackenzie, chief executive of the Scottish Arbitration Centre
    (Moderator)
