Number of pupils on law courses up 13 per cent
There are 190 more ‘placed applicants’ for law at Scottish universities this year compared to 2016, an increase of 13 per cent to 1,640, from last year’s figure of 1,450.
Heather McKendrick, head of outreach and careers at the Law Society of Scotland, said: “Many students are drawn to studying law at university as it’s an excellent degree to have and is valued by many employers.
“Not everyone who studies law at undergraduate level wants to undertake further study and ultimately join the legal profession but, for those who do, we work to ensure that students have the information they need to make informed decisions about their future.
“It’s important that law students can access information about what is required to qualify as a solicitor and the legal market generally as there are fluctuations in the number of available traineeships from year to year. We visit all of Scotland’s law schools several times during the course of the degree and at diploma stage, provide information on the Law Society website, including annual traineeship statistics, and have encouraged students to sign up to our student associate scheme to ensure they can receive regular updates from us.”
