Overall success for Scots lawyers in general election
Yesterday’s general election saw Scots lawyers perform well overall with two holding onto their seats and another two newly elected as MPs.
Advocate Joanna Cherry QC MP (pictured) took Edinburgh South West for the SNP, beating advocate and Conservative candidate Gordon Lindhorst.
Conservative MP and former solicitor David Mundell kept his seat of Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale – the only Conservative seat in Scotland.
Richard Arkless MP, a former solicitor who practised in Edinburgh and Cheshire, took Dumfries and Galloway for the SNP.
Liberal Democrat Alistair Carmichael MP, former procurator fiscal depute and solicitor, retained his constituency of Orkney and Shetland – making him the only Liberal Democrat MP north of the border.
Former solicitor and shadow foreign secretary Douglas Alexander lost his seat of Paisley and Renfrewshire South to 20-year-old SNP candidate Mhairi Black MP.
