Media lawyer Paul Tweed has put Amazon on notice after a seemingly AI-generated biography appeared for sale online next to his recently-released memoir.
Mr Tweed, an international libel lawyer to the rich and famous, has been speaking in Edinburgh and is due to speak in Glasgow tonight about his life and work.
Online shoppers looking for From Holywood to Hollywood: My Life as an International Libel Lawyer to the Rich and Famous, published by Merrion Press, might have instead come across a nondescript book titled Paul Tweed: The Biography.
The unauthorised paperback of fewer than 30 pages was on offer in the UK for £12.95 — just below the price point of Mr Tweed’s own book — but its Amazon listing has since disappeared.
No author is named on the plain black cover of the book, which purported to be independently published by “PT Press” and printed by Amazon through its self-publishing system.
“We have written to Amazon’s lawyers requesting details of who is responsible for the book, which we believe to be AI-generated,” Mr Tweed, founder and senior partner of WP Tweed & Co, told our sister publication Irish Legal News.
“Who is receiving the £12.95 purchase price for a book that is less than 30 pages long and is simply information about me generated by artificial intelligence?
“How many copies of this book were sold, and how come it has appeared for sale on Amazon between my recently-published memoir and my earlier book?”
Amazon has so far “not been prepared to give me this basic information”, he said.
“My primary concern is that people would be spending nearly £13 to buy the book, believing that it is my memoir or a genuine biography of me, when in fact it is something that has simply been scraped off the internet.
“I’m still waiting for the information I’ve requested and we are proposing to take action if we don’t receive it in the very near future.”
Paul Tweed will be speaking at the Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow tonight at 5:30pm. Book a place here.
