Police Scotland spent over £3m to police Trump visit

TrumpPolice Scotland spent £3.2 million policing US President Donald Trump’s two-day visit to Scotland last year.

In response to an FOI request from The Guardian, the force confirmed that 5,537 personnel had claimed overtime or time off in lieu because of Trump’s visit. The overtime bill alone totalled nearly £1.6 million.

The UK government has previously committed to paying for the cost of policing Trump’s visit to the UK. English and Welsh forces estimate that they spent around £18 million.

Scottish Green co-convener Patrick Harvie told The Guardian: “The public will be appalled at the cost we are all paying as a result of the UK government fawning over this bigoted bully.

“He should never have been invited and Police Scotland should send the bill not to the UK government but to Trump himself as his visit was part business expense part ego trip.”
