Prison reform NGO to host film nights

Howard League Scotland has announced a series of film nights over the winter and early spring to raise and discuss important penal policy issues.

The penal reform organisation has chosen films which are available on popular streaming platforms such as Netflix, BBC iPlayer or YouTube. Individuals will watch the films on their own time and then join the events to discuss the films with special guests.

The first event, on Wednesday 7 December at 8pm-9pm, will discuss White Bear, an episode of the TV series Black Mirror, with Jamie Bennett.

Mr Bennett has experience working in prisons in England and Wales at senior levels, both as governor and in national strategy at HMPPS. He is currently the chief strategy officer for the Youth Justice Board for England and Wales. He has also written extensively on prisons, including on prison films, and edits the Prison Service Journal.

A spokesperson for Howard League Scotland said: “Films and TV shows often raise, in vivid ways, important issues about punishment and prisons. This short series of film nights on relevant topics is intended to promote awareness of these challenging issues, and to provoke engaging discussions about how they can be addressed, all in a relaxed and informal setting.”

Tickets for the first event are available by clicking here. For more information, visit the Howard League Scotland website.
