Prosecutor Roderick Urquhart retires
Highlands solicitor advocate Roderick Urquhart is to retire after four decades in the law, The Press and Journal reports.
Mr Urquhart was educated in Aberdeen – at Robert Gordon’s College and thereafter at Aberdeen University.
He embarked on his career in law as an apprentice with an Elgin-based firm. In 1983, he began his service with the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service as a depute in Ayr. Over the years, his career took him to various locations including Glasgow, Edinburgh, Kilmarnock, Kirkwall, and Lerwick. He also experienced a brief stint in private practice between 2007 and 2009.
He also contributed to the investigation of war crimes. This work took him overseas, where he collaborated with law enforcement officers and prosecutors in Israel, Australia, and Canada, under the auspices of the Crown Office.
In 2013, he was appointed as the sole jury prosecutor in Inverness, a position he held for several years until the operations were moved to the Inverness Justice Centre. His final role involved handling health and safety cases in the northern region of Scotland.
During his career he prosecuted the Naked Rambler, the GM crop protesters and the Greenpeace activists who infamously stormed an oil rig in Cromarty Firth.
