Former Scots lawyer seeks participants for academic research on counselling

A former lawyer who is embarking on a new career in counselling and psychotherapy is looking for help from the legal profession.

Following a successful career in law, Katie McKenna, previously of the Law Society of Scotland, is now retraining to become a counsellor and psychotherapist and is currently studying for a masters degree at the University of Wolverhampton.

From Counsel to Counsellor: Perceptions and attitudes towards counselling within Legal profession in Great Britain.

Are you a solicitor or trainee solicitor practising in Scotland, England, or Wales?  

Would you like to share your views on counselling with a former solicitor?  

Do you have an hour to dedicate to a face to face or online interview? 

If you’ve answered yes to all the questions above and are not currently accessing mental health support services for a diagnosed mental health condition, you are invited to participate.

Here are a few things to know before getting in touch:

  • No experience of counselling is necessary to participate.
  • This research project is being undertaken as part of a masters level dissertation the University of Wolverhampton.
  • The purpose of this research is to explore attitudes and perceptions of counselling within the solicitor population.
  • 10-15 volunteers will be invited to take part in a semi-structured interview lasting approximately one hour.
  • Prior to the interview you will be provided with a participant information sheet providing an overview of what to expect.
  • You will be asked to sign a consent form prior to the start of the interview.
  • Interviews will take place face to face where possible or over MS Teams and be audio-recorded.
  • Findings from the research will be published by the University of Wolverhampton and may be subsequently published in various journals.
  • Confidentiality will be assured, and pseudonyms will be used for all participants to avoid identification.
  • This study has been reviewed by the University of Wolverhampton Ethics Committee.
