SCBA optimistic following meeting with Yousaf over jury trials
The Scottish Criminal Bar Association (SCBA) has expressed optimism after a roundtable discussion about jury trials during the COVID-19 emergency.
Justice Secretary Humza Yousaf hosted the video conference in which the SCBA and other interested parties were represented.
Ronnie Renucci QC, SCBA president, said: “The meeting was extremely inclusive and constructive, and it is clear that all parties are working hard to find a temporary solution that will allow solemn trials to recommence when the situation permits.
“Following the meeting, the SCBA is extremely hopeful that a workable solution will be found to enable this to happen. We look forward to further discussions with the Cabinet Secretary in the near future in order to achieve this.”
The Scottish government had published a discussion paper in which the only option it endorsed was the previously rejected decision to abolish juries in solemn trials.
