Scots law firm founded during reign of Queen Victoria to close its doors

A law firm that dates back to the reign of Queen Victoria is to close its doors after the senior partner announced his retirement, The Herald reports.

Graham and Finlayson has occupied the same offices in Comrie Street, Crieff, Perthshire, since 1885.

Senior partner Robert Bolton is retiring after almost 50 years as a solicitor. In addition to Mr Bolton and partner David Smart, the firm employs six staff and deals with conveyancing, tax and succession.

Mr Bolton and Mr Smart said: “After much discussion it has been decided the firm will cease trading by the end of May.

“Over the years work in the legal profession has become increasingly complicated and specialised.

“In order to adapt to these changes legal firms have tended to become larger, with specific departments dedicated to providing specialist legal advice.”

Mr Bolton joined the firm in the 1960s, working for his late father and became senior partner in 1972. Mr Smart became a partner in 1991 and will move on to Miller Hendry as an associate.
