Scots law graduate Katherine Grainger becomes most decorated female Olympian
British rower Katherine Grainger has become the most decorated female Olympian after winning silver with Victoria Thornley in the double sculls at Rio 2016.
Ms Grainger, 40, has an LLB from Edinburgh University, a masters in medical law from Glasgow University and a PhD in homicide from King’s College London.
With her latest win she adds a fourth silver medal to the gold she won at the 2012 London games.
After London she took a break from sport to earn her PhD but made a comeback for Rio.
She told the BBC: “I don’t think anything could eclipse London because of everything that surrounded it.
“But I remember at the start of this campaign feeling that if I could come out with anything, a medal of any kind, it would probably be my greatest achievement.
“There were many, many dark days if I am honest where I couldn’t see this happening so to be standing here, finally, in the Rio sunshine with a big medal around our necks, has made it all worthwhile.”
