Scottish Law Commission welcomes proposals for new parliamentary mechanism
The Scottish Law Commission has welcomed the recommendation on law reform by the Commission on Parliamentary Reform in its report published this week.
The Commission on Parliamentary Reform notes the wider engagement and consultation by the Scottish Law Commission in making proposals for reform of the law, and the role of the commission in ensuring that Scots law remains up to date.
In relation to Scottish Law Commission reports, the Commission on Parliamentary Reform recommends that the Parliament should provide a mechanism for ministers to announce to Parliament (either in committee or in chamber) when they receive Scottish Law Commission reports proposing law reform (recommendation 48).
The Scottish Law Commission’s chairman, Lord Pentland, said: “The Scottish Law Commission welcomes the support by the Commission on Parliamentary Reform for strengthening the processes for taking forward law reform in Scotland.
“I would like to see the Scottish Parliament taking on an enhanced role in debating and implementing Scottish Law Commission recommendations. This is all part of our continuing efforts to ensure that Scots law remains up to date and serves the needs of today’s society.”
