Scullion Law hosts tenth debating competition
School pupils in Lanarkshire debated the topic of cutting welfare support for compulsive gamblers at a competition hosted by Scullion LAW.
The Debating Cup, now in its tenth year, was judged by Ian Leitch CBE, Margaret Mitchell MSP, Hannah from Glasgow University Debating Union and Gordon Lennox senior private client solicitor from Scullion LAW.
The competition saw Uddingston Grammar pupils Cameron Wilson and Ross Wilson speak for the motion ‘this House would cut welfare support for compulsive gamblers’ against David Fox and Owen Harrison, of St Andrews & St Brides High School.
David and Owen won the debate, convincing judges of the merits of opposing the motion.
Mr Leitch said: “The level of debating was exceptional and every pupil that took part should be proud. It was also incredible to invite and welcome back pupils from previous years who spoke about their experience and how the Scullion LAW Annual Debate positively impacted on their lives.”
Ms Mitchell said she was “proud of her continued association with the Scullion LAW Annual Debating Competition and looks forward to next year. There are so many talented people in the community and this competition gives the youth in our society an opportunity to shine. Long may it continue”.
