Sheriff Edington retires after more than 20 years on the bench
On 15 October 2021, Sheriff Martin Edington sat for the last time at Livingston Sheriff Court as its senior sheriff.
After more than 20 years on the shrieval bench, Sheriff Edington will officially retire on 27 October. From 1999 until 2003, Sheriff Edington presided as a temporary sheriff, then an all Scotland floating sheriff, in some 34 of the then 51 sheriff courts throughout Scotland.
He thereafter sat as a floating sheriff at Linlithgow until it closed in 2009, after the opening of the Civic Centre at Livingston. Since then, he has sat as a resident sheriff at Livingston, latterly as its senior sheriff.
At a special sitting of Livingston Sheriff Court, attended by shrieval colleagues, the local bar and court and connected staff, Sheriff Edington was thanked for his exceptional service to the judiciary, in West Lothian in particular.
He will, however, continue to sit from time to time as a retired sheriff. Sheriff Edington indicated that he had not made plans for life after the bench, although he suspected that his wife, Susan, has this all mapped out. It may involve gardening and hopefully, as travel opportunities improve, some travel.
Sheriff Edington took the opportunity to thank all who have appeared before him or worked with him over the years, particularly the sheriff court staff and gave a special thank you to his shrieval colleagues, for their support and friendship over the years.
