Shortest-serving home sec in history Suella Braverman goes down fighting
Suella Braverman KC has attained the distinction of being the shortest-serving home secretary in British history.
Ms Braverman, who took silk upon being appointed attorney general in 2020, breached the ministerial code after she sent a government document to someone who was not authorised to receive it.
BBC News reports that she resigned while other outlets have said she was fired.
She said in her resignation letter that there had been “a technical infringement of the rules”, adding: “I have made a mistake; I accept responsibility: I resign.”
But while doing so she took a swipe at the government, saying it had broken “key pledges” and failed to reduce immigration numbers.
She wrote: “It is obvious to every one that we are going through a tumultuous time. I have concerns about the direction of this government.
“Not only have we broken key pledges that were promised to our voters, but I have had serious concerns about this government’s commitment to honouring manifesto commitments, such as reducing overall migration numbers and stopping illegal migration, particularly the dangerous small boats crossings.”
She has been replaced by Grant Shapps, who was sacked as transport secretary six weeks ago.
