SLN Spotlight: Derek McCombe
What has been your best experience as a lawyer?
Being made up to partner at MMS after having trained with the firm. It was a real affirmation that the hard work over the years was worth it. Having said that, being told that my gran told all her friends that “my grandson is a lawyer you know” after I qualified was also a very proud moment.
What has been your worst experience as a lawyer?
The dreaded completion meeting that goes on for three days, without anyone getting any sleep.
Why did you choose the law?
I am one of the “strange ones” who always wanted to become a lawyer and, in particular, a corporate lawyer. I also had limited choice, as the manager of the Irish rugby team must have misplaced my telephone number!
Who or what has been the greatest professional influence in your life?
There have been many people who have influenced my career and taken the time to help me be a better lawyer through my time at MMS. I have always tried to learn and adopt something from each of the partners I have worked with at the various stages of my career, in the hope that I can take the best bits from everyone!
What advice would you give to anyone considering a career in the law?
Take the chance, when studying, to look at a variety of subjects and, if possible, speak to or shadow people working across these fields, as there are so many areas of the law, each needing varying skill sets and ultimately resulting in many different types of job and career path.
What would you want to be if you were not a lawyer?
A lottery winner (obvious choice) would do nicely or a professional golfer playing in the Ryder Cup would have been fun!
How do you relax after work?
Generally running round the house putting out make believe fires and re-creating Fireman Sam episodes with my three-year old but a game of golf or catching up with friends over a pint or three is welcome, when I get the chance.
What is your favourite holiday destination and why?
Either (i) South of France - beautiful coast, sun and good wine, what’s not to love; or (ii) Vietnam - perfect mix of busy cities and unspoilt (or yet to be spoilt!) coastlines.
