Strasbourg court elects new president
The European Court of Human Rights has elected Guido Raimondi from Italy as its new President. He will take office on 1st November 2015.
The President was elected by secret ballot by the plenary Court.
Mr Raimondi succeeds Dean Spielmann, from Luxembourg, whose mandate will come to an end on 31 October 2015.
He was born in Naples and has a Master’s degree in law from the University of Naples, 1975.
He was assistant lecturer to the first chair of International Law in the law faculty of Naples, 1976-1977 Judge, 1977-1986.
Between 1997 and 2002 he was Advocate General at the Court of Cassation and an ad hoc judge of the ECtHR between 2001 and 2003.
From 2002-2003 he was a judge of the Court of Cassation and, from 2003 to 2007, a deputy legal adviser to the International Labour Office in Geneva.
Since May 2010 he has been a judge of the European Court of Human Rights and Vice-President of the Court.
Since November 2012 he has been a President of Section.
