Strathclyde Law Clinic seeks solicitor volunteers for its Initial Advice Clinics

Cara Hope

The Law Clinic is a student-run organisation, committed to improving access to justice by offering free legal advice in a variety of matters including employment, housing, consumer and Scottish Social Services Council cases, to those who otherwise cannot obtain legal advice.

The Initial Advice Clinics (IAC) provide on-the-spot legal advice by volunteer solicitors every second Wednesday in the evening. The IACs have been running since 2012 and from March 2020, have ran successfully remotely on Zoom. The sessions are operated by student advisors at the Law Clinic, however, we rely on volunteer solicitors or trainee solicitors to provide advice. Advice can vary from how to write a letter to advising on prospects of a court or tribunal claim.

Individuals who have enquired at the Law Clinic are offered an IAC appointment if their enquiry is more suitable to be seen by one of our volunteer solicitors. Conflict checks are ran in advance where possible. Enquirers are allocated a 30-minute slot, which begins with student advisors taking basic contact details and case facts before the solicitor gives advice. All enquirers must agree to the Law Clinic notice of disclaimer and consent to our privacy policy before any advice is given. Volunteer solicitors are also protected by the Law Clinic’s legal indemnity insurance.

As IAC co-ordinator, I receive enquiries in advance and match to a relevant solicitor ahead of the IAC. I am responsible for ensuring solicitors are receive enough information in advance and I am the point of contact for solicitors, students and clients in attendance at the IACs. I will be holding an information evening on Zoom on 5 January 2021, for anyone who would like more information. Shadowing opportunities are also available to allow volunteers to become comfortable with the process.
