Strathclyde University has won this year’s Lord Jones Moot Competition.

The competition is named in memory of University of Dundee Law School alumnus Lord Jones, who was instrumental in its founding and judged the final in 2016.

Now in its tenth year, the Lord Jones Moot offers an opportunity for law students across Scotland to come together to network, further their advocacy skills and moot in an intense competitive environment over the course of a single day. This year, the moot problem concerned trustee duties and awards of expenses. The competition was sponsored by Thorntons Law LLP.

Eleven teams attended the competition on 15 February, representing nine universities across Scotland – Dundee, Abertay, St Andrews, Stirling, Edinburgh, Napier, Glasgow, Strathclyde and Stirling.

Strathclyde’s Abby Mackay and Christopher Reilly won this year’s competition, narrowly beating Dundee’s Emma Bell and Olivia McMurtie.

Lady Drummond judged the final and paid tribute to Lord Jones in her address to the competitors.

Organiser and University of Dundee Mooting Society vice-president, Iona Henderson, said: “It was great to see such a high standard of advocacy across a challenging and rewarding day. We are very grateful to Thorntons for their sponsorship, to our judges who made the day possible, and to Lord Jones’ son, Richard for attending on the day.”

Iain Buchan, an associate at Thorntons, said: “Thorntons is very pleased to continue to support the University of Dundee Mooting Society and the Lord Jones Mooting Competition. It was great to see the next generation of lawyers competing to such a high standard. This competition means a lot to me personally, and it is fantastic to see it thrive year on year.”
