Treasury solicitor visits Edinburgh Law School
Treasury solicitor and permanent secretary of the Government Legal Department, Susanna McGibbon, visited Edinburgh Law School last week.
Ms McGibbon attended the school’s Festival of Legal Possibilities, an opportunity for students to explore legal careers outside of the traditional corporate world.
As part of her visit, she spoke to students from all years and levels of study about what it is like to work as a government lawyer. She addressed some of the unique benefits of working at the employed bar, including how government lawyers are exposed to some of the most complex and high-profile legal issues of the day.
The treasury solicitor is the UK government’s most senior legal official and acts as head of the wider government legal profession.
During her time in Edinburgh, Ms McGibbon also met with her colleagues in the Government Legal Service for Scotland as well as Advocate General for Scotland, Baroness Smith of Cluny KC.
The Government Legal Department has around 2,500 solicitors and barristers who provide the full range of legal services to the majority of central government departments.
