UK government outlines replacement food protection scheme
New rules to protect traditional British foods including Stilton cheese, Melton Mowbray pork pies and Scotch whisky have been outlined by the UK government.
The protections will replace the EU’s geographical indication scheme after the end of the Brexit transition period.
Geographical indications will be conferred on regional and traditional foods whose authenticity can be verified and logos will be displayed on produce given this status.
Legislation for the scheme has been laid in Parliament and it will replace the EU scheme on January 1 2021.
Environment Secretary George Eustice said: ”The new logos launched today will become a staple on supermarket aisles in the UK.”
