The UK government is planning to strengthen its position on Brexit through a series of appointments to the House of Lords, The Guardian reports.

Around 10UK government to strengthen Brexit position through Lords appointments peers will join the chamber, as well as three Labour peers and either one or two Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) peers, sources told the newspaper.

Labour peer Lord Adonis has criticised the move as “a classic example of packing the Lords to try and make Brexit easier to endorse”.

The appointments - the first full tranche since Theresa May became prime minister - are expected to be formally announced within days.

Ms May was rumoured to be considering the move as long ago as December 2017, but the appointments were “repeatedly delayed” in the face of public opposition, according to the Electoral Reform Society.
