US chief justice rebukes Trump over remarks about judge

US Chief Justice John Roberts has rebuked President Donald Trump in response to his call for a judge who ruled against the administration to be impeached.

“For more than two centuries, it has been established that impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision,” Chief Justice John Roberts said in a rare statement.

He added that the “normal appellate review process exists for that purpose”.

Mr Trump had referred to US District Judge James Boasberg as a “troublemaker and agitator” after he ordered that the administration halt deportations of accused gang members to El Salvador.

The removal of a federal judge in an impeachment process would require the House of Representatives to vote on articles of impeachment and for two-thirds of the Senate to vote for conviction.

Since the country’s founding, it has considered the impeachment of 15 judges, among them one Supreme Court justice. Eight were found guilty in Senate trials.
