US: Roy Moore sues Sacha Baron Cohen over ‘paedophile detector’
Roy Moore, 71, a former candidate for the US Senate, is suing the comedian Sacha Baron Cohen for defamation after he was the victim of a prank.
In a sketch for the show Who Is America?, Mr Baron Cohen pretended he was an Israeli anti-terror expert demonstrating how to use a “paedophile detector”.
When he waved the device near Mr Moore it beeped.
The politician has been plagued by allegations of sexual misconduct with teenagers, which he denies.
His lawyers seek $95 million in damages from the CBS and Showtime networks as well as the comedian.
Mr Moore believed he was appearing on a show awarding him for his support of Israel.
The complaint states: “Defendant Cohen’s character falsely and fraudulently introduced a false and fraudulent ‘device’ supposedly invented by the Israeli Army to detect paedophiles.
“During the segment, Defendant Cohen’s ‘device’ - as part of the false and fraudulent routine - purports to detect Judge Moore as a sex offender, thus defaming him.”
