Usman Tariq on life at the bar
Advocate Usman Tariq has spoken to the School of Law at Glasgow University about his life at university and career so far at the Scottish bar.
Of his first case at the Supreme Court he says: “I represented the successful appellant in the case of Henderson v Foxworth Investments Ltd (2014). It was a memorable “bucket list” goal to tick off so early in my career at the bar. It was a moment of reflection. I would still have been at the very junior end of a law firm had I chosen to remain a solicitor. However, a career at the bar has given me some wonderful opportunities, including successfully arguing a case in the UK Supreme Court while still in my 20s.”
He also offers some sage advice to budding lawyers: “My advice to law students is to remember that the legal profession in Scotland is small. Some of your peers will become your colleagues in future years, some may become your boss, and others might become your instructing solicitors if you are at the Bar. It is important to treat everyone with courtesy and respect and to build good relationships with your peers as these relationships can have a lasting benefit in your career.”
