Webinar: Protecting dogs from exploitation and abuse
Friday 26 February
12 - 4pm
A webinar on how we protect dogs from exploitation and abuse and what part can the law play in addressing these serious issues will be held this month.
Hosted by the A-LAW Scotland Committee, UK Dog Welfare: Law Reform, will highlight the plight of the dogs who come from low welfare, puppy farms within the UK and abroad and the challenges facing regulators to close down the trade to protect dogs and consumers.
The event will look at the allied issues of ‘designer’ dogs and fashion trends, including ear cropping and other mutilations, as well as the genetic conformities deliberately bred into some breeds, despite the welfare issues they present.
It will also address other areas of law reform, including Scotland’s new Dogs (Protection of Livestock) (Amendment) (Scotland) Bill, introduced by Emma Harper MSP.
Outline:
- Welcome and introduction, chair - Scott Blair, advocate
- The Dogs (Protection of Livestock) (Amendment) (Scotland) Bill - Emma Harper MSP
- Illegal puppy farming and designer dogs - Chief Inspector, Special Investigations Unit, Scottish SPCA
- The puppy trade: licensing and imports - Marc Abraham, Pup Aid
- Genetics and conformities - Dan O’Neill, Royal Veterinary College
The webinar is free, but it is suggested that a voluntary donation of £25 towards A-LAW’s charitable work be made via the Eventbrite donation ticket.
